Dose of colistin. a work in progress?

    Get PDF
We thank Rashid and colleagues [1] and Honoré and colleagues [2] for their comments regarding our article on risk factors for acute kidney injury in pa- tients receiving colistin or other nephrotoxic antimi- crobials [3]. It is correct that we did not specifically report urine output in the text, but it was obviously included in the RIFLE (Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss of kidney function, and End-stage kidney disease) criteria reported in Table two [3]

Evaluation Of TRIMARC Procurement Procedures (Interim Report)

Innovative practices in construction contracting techniques have become more frequent and necessary in recent years. These practices benefit the transportation industry by experimenting with methods different from the traditional methods. This allows for growth and the adoption of procedures that provide higher quality and a better benefit to cost ratio. An Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), referred to as TRIMARC (Traffic Response and Incident Management Assisting the River Cities), was installed in the Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana area. A system integrator approach was used for the installation, operation, and maintenance of this system. Special Experimental Project No. 14 (SEP-14) procedures were used to procure the services of the equipment installation contractor. An evaluation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the process approved for this procurement. This evaluation was accomplished by review of documentation related to the TRIMARC project including contracts, memorandums, and proposals. Also, input was received from the principal participants in the project including representatives of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, HNTB, Spartan Construction Company, and TRW, Inc. The SEP-14 process is an innovative means of procuring projects that may be uncharacteristic to the traditional projects normally encountered by highway departments. SEP-14 provides states an opportunity to use and evaluate the contractual arrangements when an alternate process is more beneficial than the traditional processes. After some time period, this alternate process may be evaluated by the Federal Highway Administration to determine if it should be classified operational instead of experimental. The evaluation on the TRIMARC project\u27s use of the system integrator and SEP-14 bidding practices has been very positive. The project has encountered some delays; however, it is progressing in a manner that is satisfactory to all parties involved. The overall project has been received positively and the contract is now being extended to include a larger area for the incident management program. The SEP-14 process has provided the system integrator more flexibility and has allowed the procurement of the equipment and services to be based on criteria other than cost. This has allowed the system integrator to receive the specific equipment desired and to contract for the equipment installation from a contractor that had previous experience with similar projects resulting in time and cost savings to Kentucky and Indiana

Lyapunov exponents from geodesic spread in configuration space

    Get PDF
The exact form of the Jacobi -- Levi-Civita (JLC) equation for geodesic spread is here explicitly worked out at arbitrary dimension for the configuration space manifold M_E = {q in R^N | V(q) < E} of a standard Hamiltonian system, equipped with the Jacobi (or kinetic energy) metric g_J. As the Hamiltonian flow corresponds to a geodesic flow on (M_E,g_J), the JLC equation can be used to study the degree of instability of the Hamiltonian flow. It is found that the solutions of the JLC equation are closely resembling the solutions of the standard tangent dynamics equation which is used to compute Lyapunov exponents. Therefore the instability exponents obtained through the JLC equation are in perfect quantitative agreement with usual Lyapunov exponents. This work completes a previous investigation that was limited only to two-degrees of freedom systems.Comment: REVTEX file, 10 pages, 2 figure

Receptor-Receptor Coupling in Bacterial Chemotaxis: Evidence for Strongly Coupled Clusters

    Get PDF
AbstractReceptor coupling is believed to explain the high sensitivity of the Escherichia coli chemotaxis network to small changes in levels of chemoattractant. We compare in detail the activity response of coupled two-state receptors for different models of receptor coupling: weakly-coupled extended one-dimensional and two-dimensional lattice models and the Monod-Wyman-Changeux model of isolated strongly-coupled clusters. We identify features in recent data that distinguish between the models. Specifically, researchers have measured the receptor activity response to steps of chemoattractant for a variety of engineered E. coli strains using in vivo fluorescence resonance energy transfer. We find that the fluorescence resonance energy transfer results for wild-type and for a low-activity mutant are inconsistent with the lattice models of receptor coupling, but consistent with the Monod-Wyman-Changeux model of receptor coupling, suggesting that receptors form isolated strongly-coupled clusters

Stress and Violence in the Workplace and on Campus: A Growing Problem for Business, Industry and Academia

    Get PDF
Levels of stress and violence at work have been increasing globally for the past few decades. Whether the setting is business and industry or a college campus, this disturbing trend affects a growing number of people, including those who do not work directly in these environments. In this paper the authors describe the relationship between stress and violence and offer recommendations as to how managers and administrators can reduce employee and student stress levels and help to prevent hostile behaviour from occurring in private companies, public agencies and institutions of higher education. Proactive strategies for preventing violent incidents are included together with suggestions on how to deal effectively with such incidents when they do arise

Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries in General Relativity: Quasiequilibrium Formulation

We present a new numerical method for the construction of quasiequilibrium models of black hole-neutron star binaries. We solve the constraint equations of general relativity, decomposed in the conformal thin-sandwich formalism, together with the Euler equation for the neutron star matter. We take the system to be stationary in a corotating frame and thereby assume the presence of a helical Killing vector. We solve these coupled equations in the background metric of a Kerr-Schild black hole, which accounts for the neutron star's black hole companion. In this paper we adopt a polytropic equation of state for the neutron star matter and assume large black hole--to--neutron star mass ratios. These simplifications allow us to focus on the construction of quasiequilibrium neutron star models in the presence of strong-field, black hole companions. We summarize the results of several code tests, compare with Newtonian models, and locate the onset of tidal disruption in a fully relativistic framework.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures; added discussion, tables; PRD in pres

Characterization of a Double Mesospheric Bore Over Europe

    Get PDF
Observations of a pair of mesospheric bore disturbances that propagated through the nighttime mesosphere over Europe are presented. The observations were made at the Padua Observatory, Asiago (45.9\ub0N, 11.5\ub0E), by the Boston University all-sky imager on 11 March 2013. The bores appeared over the northwest horizon, approximately 30 min apart, and propagated toward the southeast. Using additional satellite and radar data, we present evidence indicating the bores originated in the mesosphere from a single, larger-scale mesospheric disturbance propagating through the mesopause region. Furthermore, the large-scale mesospheric disturbance appeared to be associated with an intense weather disturbance that moved southeastward over the United Kingdom and western Europe during 10 and 11 March
